The British Junior Squash Championships is the second largest junior event of the squash calendar, attracting the best talent from across the UK. It was played in Sheffield from the 31st October to the 4th November, offering four days of gruelling competition for all involved.
Club junior members Oscar and Finley Brown were both seeded in the Under 13’s draw and performed brilliantly reaching the final on Sunday, losing one game between them on the way. After relatively straightforward early rounds the semi-final saw Oscar take to the all-glass court to play the No.3 seed. He made relatively light work of the match, coming out with a 3-0 win and securing his place in the final. At the same time, Finley took on the Scottish No.1 and having lost the first game, collected himself and adapted his game to take the next three games and booked his place to play his brother in the final.
Grace Brown meanwhile was also in competition and had a tough draw in the girls Under 15's draw, playing the No.2 seed in the first round. She showed great character and perseverance in a tough match, ultimately coming up just short. She then won two out of her next four matches to finish 22nd in a draw of 32 players, which was in line with her seeding and a very promising result as one of the youngest in the age boundary. Grace will get another shot in the same age group next year so watch this space!
In the boys Under 13’s Final, Oscar was the eventual victor on this occasion winning the match 3-1 (11-8 11-6 6-11 11-5). Both boys displayed their professionalism and talent for the audience and those watching on a live video stream. It is a tough ask defending the status of No.1 and No.2 in the country with 30 other boys looking to take the crown, but they stood up to the challenge admirably and we look forward to see how they further progress in the future.Â
